Faculty Seminar - Organizational Details

Seminar Design

The 2018 seminar will take place from June 8 to June 18. The seminar is designed for faculty members, scholars and experts who have specialized in International, European and German studies. The program is heavily scheduled with academic and analytical lectures by specialists from Berlin universities, government agencies and other public or private institutions in Berlin as well as with site visits. Each session is conducted in English and followed by discussion. Apart from the sightseeing tours included during the program, there is not much free time for tourist activities. It is suggested that those who want to add tourist experiences independently make arrangements for a pre- or post-seminar stay in Berlin.

The program begins in the late afternoon of Friday, 8 June 2018, with a welcome dinner, and ends after breakfast on Monday, 18 June 2018. The program draft can be viewed here. Participants arriving early or departing late must make accommodation arrangements for the additional day(s) independently. To take full advantage of the program introduction, participants arriving on the first day of the seminar are advised to arrive no later than 4pm.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation is reserved based on single-room occupancy, unless the double-occupancy option is selected on the application. Double rooms are available for a reduced fee of EUR 200 for those wishing to share a room with another participant. Participants requesting a double room must indicate this preference on the Application Form. This option is available only when other participants also opt for double-occupancy rooms.

Meals: Two meals, breakfast and lunch, or dinner, are provided on a daily basis. The welcome and farewell dinners are also included in the program fee.

Physical Exertion

Berlin is a big city with an almost perfect public transportation system. Nevertheless, some moderate walking is involved to get from meeting places to public transportation stops and vice versa. Thus, seminar participants should be in good health and have at most minor limits on physical mobility.

Pre-departure Information

Seminar participants receive extensive pre-departure orientation materials, including a newsletter, bibliographies of recommended readings; information on the seminar’s leadership, host institution, and lecturers; a detailed program itinerary; and safety, health, and cultural information on Berlin and the sites to be visited.
